After spending a weekend skippering a 50 foot Catamaran around Moreton bay in storms of up to 30knots, I’ve come away with a new appreciation for the Sydney Hobart sailors! and the thought of little Jessica Watson circumnavigating the globe single handed makes my head spin more than it is this morning searching for my land legs.
I’ve seen the seas on the Bass Strait first hand after two successful sea kayak crossings in 2007 and 2009 and let me tell you it’s out there for exposure and intensity.
I’ve come away from the voyage with a great idea for a surf ski/ocean kayak trip that could become an awesome race in the future.
Some time early in the new year I will take a first hand look at this new course and see how long it takes- start point will be Bribie Island, leg one 20km to Tangalooma wrecks on Moreton Island, Leg 2- a further 20km to the south end of Moreton Is, Leg 3-on to point lookout on North Stadbroke 13km, rounding point lookout on the east side travelling with some luck down wind to the southern tip of Stradbroke a big leg of 38km arriving at Jumping Pin bar, Leg 4-from here its ‘only’ 20km to the Southport Seaway effectively traveling from the Sushine coast to the Gold Coast.
Stay tuned for dates if your keen to Join me on the ‘recci’ trip.
Have a great week
